Description:
The Arizona FEA in partnership with Arizona State University hosted the 2008 Hunnicutt Future Educator's Academy, June 9-13, 2008 @ ASU. We had 20 students for the week long "live -in academy. The purpose of this event was to provide extensive training to "future teachers". The age group was junior and senior high school students. We provided a variety of activities and experiences including sessions on:
technology, special education, effective lesson plans, speech pathology, classroom management as well as a site visit to an all technology school in the valley. Students were divided into 3 faculty groups and their task was to design the "school of the future" - what will education look like 5-10 years from now and what tools will teachers need to teach in the future. Each faculty group was supervised by a college student from the college of education at ASU. Each faculty presented their school on Friday, June 13th with special key note speakers Tome Horne - Arizona Superintendent for Public Instruction & Dr. Karen Nicodemus - Pres. of Arizona School Board, P-20 Council and Pres. of Cochise College. Students identified the
facility design, curriculum, extra curricular activities, career & technical programs, business partnerships, leadership training and staff development among other areas of school operation. This is the 4th year for our summer camp and students come away with a broader sense of teaching and a passion to pursue a teaching career as well as explore educational issues and trends for the future. This has been an excellent recruitment mtool for educational careers in Arizona.
